The Origins of Casa Abrantes Pais

To sip a wine from Casa Abrantes Pais is to experience the timeless character of Nelas and the craftsmanship of generations. Every bottle is a tribute to the past, crafted for the future, and designed to be savored in life’s most memorable moments.

Our wines are crafted from grapes grown in the historic vineyards of the Nelas region, an area renowned for its centuries-old winemaking traditions. For over 200 years, the land of Casa Abrantes Pais has been passed down through generations of the Andrade family, preserving a rich legacy of viticulture. This heritage vineyard, known for its vinhas velhas — ancient vines that yield grapes of exceptional depth and complexity — is the foundation of our wines.

The Nelas region is celebrated for its rolling hills, mineral-rich granite soils, and temperate continental climate, marked by warm, dry summers and cold winters. These conditions are ideal for cultivating the traditional grape varieties of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Alfrocheiro, and Jaen. Touriga Nacional, often referred to as the "queen" of Portuguese grapes, imparts intense floral and dark fruit aromas, while Tinta Roriz (known internationally as Tempranillo) contributes structure and depth. Alfrocheiro adds freshness with its vibrant acidity, and Jaen provides a soft, elegant texture, resulting in wines that are harmonious and layered.

At Casa Abrantes Pais, we honor these traditional qualities while embracing cutting-edge scientific methods. Advanced viticultural techniques ensure optimal grape health, and our meticulous winemaking process enhances the unique expression of the region’s terroir. This blend of tradition and innovation produces wines with a distinctive taste — a true reflection of the land’s heritage and our family’s unwavering dedication.
